MPP Harris Jump Starts Legislation to Cut Red Tape for Auto Sector
Cut the Tape
News
TORONTO – In the Ontario Legislature yesterday, Kitchener-Conestoga MPP Mike Harris introduced a Private Member’s Bill, Bill 50, the Cutting Red Tape for Motor Vehicle Dealers Act, 2018. The Bill proposes to modernize Ontario’s vehicle registration process for auto dealers and consumers. If passed, Bill 50 would eliminate the need for automobile dealers to physically bring paperwork back and forth to a licensing office upon completion of a sale or lease. Instead, dealers would be able to register and licence the newly sold vehicle online, from their dealership.
Representing over 1,000 new car dealers across Ontario, the Trillium Automobile Dealers Association fully supports Bill 50 and deeply appreciates MPP Harris for introducing this much needed legislation. If passed, Bill 50 will bring Ontario’s auto retail sector into the 21st century and have Ontario join other provinces and many US States that allow auto dealers to electronically register the vehicles they sell and lease.
Quotes
“If passed, Bill 50 will be a game changer for Ontario’s auto retail sector. We live in the digital age and it’s time to harness technology to modernize the vehicle registration process. There’s no good reason why auto dealers must still register vehicles the same way we did when my dealership opened nearly 30 years ago.”

“We applaud MPP Harris for introducing Bill 50 and taking up the fight against red tape in Ontario’s auto sector. If passed, this Bill will bring Ontario in line with other jurisdictions like Quebec, New Brunswick, PEI, New York State, Michigan and others who have been providing this service to new car dealers for years.”
